In Out of Time, Denzel Washington plays
Matt Whitlock, the Chief of Police in Banyan Key, a small town just
outside of Miami. He's got a pretty easy life, with the major
complication being the fling he is currently having with his former
high school sweetheart Ann Merai (Sanaa Lathan). You see, Ann Merai is
married to Chris Harrison (ex-Superman Dean Cain), an abusive
ex-football player and Matt's nemesis. After Matt finds out that Ann
Merai has cancer and will probably die within the next 6 months, he
gives her $485 grand he "borrowed" from the evidence room
that was seized in a high profile drug case, so she can see about
experimental surgery. That night, the Harrison house is burnt to the
ground and 2 dead bodies are found inside. Matt knows he'll be suspect
#1 unless he can stay a step ahead of the police, solve the mystery
and get back the money before his ass is on the line with the DEA. The
problem for Matt is that his soon-to-be ex-wife, a homicide detective
in Miami and the one person in the world who knows him best, is the
lead investigator on the case.
It might seem like I've given away a lot in the movie, but if you saw
any trailers for Out of Time, they already did that all for you. It
turns out to be a very predictable thriller and that is the major
downfall of the movie. You know that Matt is going to be able to stay
ahead of the cops the whole time, and the major twists in the plot can
be seen a mile away.
No special features on the disc really stand out, either. A commentary
from director Carl Franklin has some interesting points about the
shoot in Miami. However, he seems hurt by being doing the commentary
by himself, as there are long pauses where he says nothing. I think
having someone there to help set up topics for him would have been a
tremendous help. There is a run-of-the-mill featurette called
"Out of Time: Crime Scene", which runs about 20 minutes and
just seems like a showcase to gush about each of the main actors for a
few minutes and about the heat and sexiness of the Miami area playing
a character in the movie too. There are 2 outtakes which just show the
actors cracking up at flubbed scenes, an uninteresting substitute for
the normally-included deleted scenes.
One of the better features was the "Character Profiles",
with background given by Franklin and writer Dave Collard on each of
the main characters. It serves well to give you some background on
where they wanted to go with the characters. The screen tests of Dean
Cain and Sanaa Lathan are shown. The original trailer of Out of Time
is on the disc, along with other MGM releases. The most dull feature
was a photo gallery with various still shots from the movie.
I would have a tough time even calling Out of Time mediocre, both the
movie and the features on the DVD. It's definitely not worth buying,
and really only a rental if the shelves of your local Blockbuster are
particularly empty that day.
