While not appearing to have that many
special features at first, the second season set of Buffy the Vampire
Slayer does have a lot of interesting tidbits for anyone who is a fan
of the show like myself. Episodes 1-4 (contained on the first disc)
are pretty light-hearted in relation to the rest of the season. The
plots include Buffy having to conquer some inner demons from the end
of the first season, a school genius resurrecting his brother from the
dead, Xander falling for a 500 year old mummy girl and a
parent-teacher night getting ruined by an attack from a pack of
vampires. The most important parts of the episodes are the
introduction of three vital characters who appear many times in the
coming seasons: Spike, Drusilla and Oz. There were no special features
contained on the first disc.
Disc six (the final of the set) includes the two-part season finale,
Becoming I & II. This, in my opinion, may have been one of the
best season finales I have seen for any TV show. Concluding a plot
that had developed all season, Buffy comes to grips with the fact that
she must face her one true love, Angel, in a battle to the death to
prevent the destruction of the world. After watching her have almost
all that she loves taken away, we witness a heart-wrenching conclusion
that actually choked me up the first time I saw it. Great television!!
This sixth disc also contains a treasure of special features to top it
all off. Becoming I & II each have an interview with the creator
of the series, Joss Whedon. While brief, they also prove to be quite
entertaining. Other special features include 3 featurettes, one
involving set design for the series, another involving make-up design,
and finally, the one I thought was best, about the villains of Buffy
and the thought process behind creating each one. I found that one
fascinating. The disc also has trailers and TV spots for season two as
well as an art gallery, neither of which were that interesting.
Lastly, there is a biography section for the different actors of the
show, which I really liked because it not only contains a history of
the actor, but also the character they play. All the episodes are
presented in a non-widescreen format with Dolby Digital Surround.
The second season of Buffy the Vampire Slayer was the best one in my
personal opinion. This was a show I used to watch every week. It has
really slipped in the last couple years, to the point where I didn't
really watch too much this year. This fact makes this set even more
special for fans of the show, reminding them what a great series this
show was in its early years. It's a must-own for Buffy fans.
