Blade II is the sequel to the 1998 comic
book adaptation, with Wesley Snipes suiting it up as the half man/half
vampire hero. This movie does us the favor of skipping most of the the
character introductions that were taken care of in the first one, and
skips right to the plot--Blade must team with an elite team of the
vampire nation, one that was designed to specifically eliminate him,
to instead confront a more deadly foe known as the Reapers. The
Reapers are a hybrid form of vampire that threaten to make vampires
extinct.
I found Blade II to fall a little short of the original. It seemed as
though the filmmakers were trying to add more horror into the sequel,
as stated many times in the special features. But instead, I found
that it just made parts of the movie seem drawn-out and boring as
opposed to scary. I guess maybe the horror might have played out
better on the big screen. A poorly developed love plot with Blade and
a female vampire slowed the movie down as well. The action scenes were
good though, with a lot of vampire ass-kicking by Blade.
Among the special features were deleted/alternate scenes with
commentary by director Guillermo Del Toro in which he proceeded to
trash them all. There is also series of featurettes on the different
aspects of making Blade II. While these featurettes started out as
interesting, they quickly got boring and tended to drag on. There is a
press kit with cast and crew info, theatrical trailers, and director
and story board notes. There are 2 commentaries, one featuring Snipes
and movie writer David Goyer and one with Del Toro and the movie's
producer, Peter Frankfurt. Snipes and Goyer add some interesting
tidbits, but it seemed like Goyer was doing a bit too much
patting-on-the-back for Wesley.
Fans of Blade will enjoy the movie and some of the features. Those who
have not seen the original movie should not even bother with this one
until they do.
