After three seasons on "Buffy the
Vampire Slayer", Angel was spun-off into his own series. A
vampire with a soul, Angel's goal is to help the hopeless with
Batman-like vigilanteism to repent for the years of suffering he has
caused others. While a bit darker than Buffy, it maintained a lot of
the humour from the show. Bringing the Cordelia character from Buffy
helped with the new series, along with multiple appearances from Buffy
characters. However, the new characters make this series in the early
going, especially the Doyle character. Angel also does a good enough
set-up that non-Buffy fans won't feel lost with just watching this
series.
As far as the extra features go, there is something included on all 6
discs. Two of them have scripts for a couple of episodes -- boring
stuff. There are your typical featurettes that cover the characters
and story of Angel as well as text -- not a bad way for people not
familiar with the series to catch up. Two episodes carry a commentary.
The pilot episode is accompanied by a commentary featuring series
creators Joss Whedon and David Greenwalt. They have some interesting
points about what they were trying to accomplish as well as their
intentions to differentiate the series from Buffy. Episode 5 has a
commentary by writer Jane Epsenson. She, too, has some interesting
points, but at times feels like she's trying to pump herself up. The
biggest travesty in the commentary is the fact that they didn't
address the reasons for killing off Doyle after 9 episodes. He was my
favourite character and I felt they owed the fans an explanation for
his departure.
Now into its fourth season, I feel that the inaugural season of Angel
was far and away the best. Fans of the show will want to add this set
to the collection.
