Abandon centers around Katie (Katie Holmes), an overachieving college student who is about to graduate at the top of her class. However, Katie is still haunted by the disappearance of the love of her life, Embry (Charlie Hunnam), a couple years back. The incident is dragged up again as a burnt-out cop (Benjamin Bratt) starts a new investigation on Embry's vanishing.

Abandon just kind of plods along until there is a great twist at the end that I didn't see coming at all. Prior to this ending though, I just wasn't that interested in the movie. The performances are fine though -- I always enjoy Katie Holmes. Her role as Katie reminded me a lot her role as Joey Potter in Dawson's Creek, except with more of an edge.

As for the special features included with the DVD, Abandon has a making-of featurette that ends up with more talking about and with writer/director Stephen Gaghan and his quest as a first-time director than about anything else. The main participants of the film also give their opinion about what it was about, which seemed way different than what I was watching. There is a trailer for 'Abandon' as well as 'The Four Feathers'. Also included were deleted scenes with optional commentary by Gaghan. None of them were interesting though. Finally, there is a commentary by Gaghan and cinematographer Matthew Libatique, where they talk far more about the technical aspects of the film than they do about the actual plot, making it not the most riveting one I've heard.

Abandon was good enough to keep my attention. However, it just wasn't good enough to make me care.

The Movie: 5/10
The Extras: 5/10

Recommendation: See It If It's Free
