This version of the film had twenty
minutes of added scenes, but where they were, I haven't the foggiest.
The same hollow film I originally saw was still intact in all it's
action-oriented glory. They tried to delve deep, but failed to convey
a more emotional touch. Plot was mostly inconsequential, containing
several story threads that never paid off. What remained were just a
series of large scale battle scenes which lacked background support.
While they were well executed, they alone do not cut it for today's
war epic.
This DVD set had the movie along with a quick introduction by
director/producer John Woo on the fist disc, as well as two trailers
for this film and a few more promoting MGM releases. More extras were
questionably stretched out onto two other discs. The second held an
adequate featurette on the codetalkers, a brief but poignant tribute
to them and a rather dull look at the scoring process. Disc three
contained interesting bits more from the production including,
multi-angle comparisons of four battle sequences, on-the-set looks at
the filming of four action scenes and an amusing featurette on actors'
boot camp. Also on that disc was a text biography of Woo and a
collection of production photos. In terms of commentary tracks, there
were three here, all found on the first disc. One from Woo and
producer Terence Chang dealt more with production issues while another
from actors Nicolas Cage and Christian Slater covered filming
anecdotes. And finally there was one from actor Roger Willie who spoke
of his approach to the role, and codetalker advisor Albert Smith who
touched on his life experiences.
Solid action, shaky plot, mediocre film.
