This latest war drama, while successful in relaying actual events, felt clumsy as it jumped from character to character, each of which had their own story. The movie also seemed shortsighted by not introducing the action any sooner. Tension became rather stagnant for the most part, limited to whether or not the Americans would be overrun. And while one can appreciate the ambition of encompassing the distress of the wives, those scenes ended up hurting the flow of combat. Another problem, fair or not, was with the clean look at the start of the picture. The lack of dark grittiness now standard to the genre left me wanting, though it did show up near the end. But with all that said, of which little was flattering, I must admit that there were great individual scenes to be found. Wonderful effects work brought battle scenes to life masterfully. I have only ever encountered one war flick I did not like, and this was not it.

Little in terms of extras were found here. This DVD possessed a wonderful behind-the-scenes featurette, and ten hit-and-miss deleted scenes. A commentary track from director/writer Randall Wallace conveyed noble accounts of the real events, but also brought many dull movie making tidbits. I just wish there was more of a history lesson on this disc. A special edition perhaps?

A case where I suspect authenticity hampered the potential for not only an improved drama but a powerful movie.

The Movie: 5/10
The Extras: 3/10

Recommendation: See It If It's Free
