The offshoot genre of submarines has
always dealt solid entertainment. This movie was no exception, though
it certainly had it's flaws. While the overall premise was intriguing,
the events that built the plot could never be mistaken for anything
but Hollywood fiction. The suspense felt forced at times and many
dramatic moments seemed staged. Character development was also awkward
when several invested key figures didn't make it past the first hour
mark of the movie. But one can easily look past those imperfections
when presented with some great submarine tension and terrific exterior
visuals. They made it work well here. Explosions and near misses were
what was expected, and they delivered.
A few extras here on this DVD. These consisted of ten minutes of
promotional interviews, short but informative featurettes on various
topics (the movie sub's construction, the enigma machine, Britain's
capture of U-110, experiences of one US Naval sub officer and archival
material of the US participation), a trailer, cast and crew
information and production notes. For commentary, a very insightful
one was provided by director/co-writer Jonathan Mostow. He talked
almost non-stop during the film touching upon all aspects and
revealing how aware he was of filming limitations.
While possibly my least favorite submarine movie, I can't say I wasn't
entertained.
