This latest sci-fi animated flick, like
it's last few predecessors, ended as a disappointment. That's not to
say everything was bad, but just lacking some foresight. There was
plenty of cute humor and animation, of course, was flawless with
varied and detailed designs. But the story, while based on a classic
(which I've never read), just did not translate well. Half the
invested characters seemed irrelevant or underused, too many plot
points were left unclear and the musical montages, while not uncommon
on these types of films, just felt odd when they popped up. That this
was geared for a younger audience may have saved this movie.
Extras were abundant on this DVD, though many were reused in different
sections. These included three dull deleted scenes (with introductions
explaining their absences), an informative making-of featurette, a
semi-educational bit for kids on pirate history, numerous short video
segments on different behind-the-scenes subjects, three virtual tours
of the ship, a huge library of concept art, a music video, a rough to
final animation comparison, two theatrical trailers for this film and
nine trailers promoting other films. A commentary track from directors
Ron Clements and John Musker and producer Roy Conli provided insight
aurally as well as visually when the film was interrupted with
fragments already found elsewhere on the disc.
Merit for the dazzling visuals, but the story execution was not up to
snuff.
