I do not consider myself a history buff,
but I have always enjoyed Hollywood produced historical dramas and
this one is no exception. While the black and white scenes at the
opening caused me some concern, the film makers succeeded in relaying
a tension-filled situation across to its audience. With great
performances and some credible computer graphics work, my only
complaint is that they seemed to stretch out the material too thin
towards the end.
This DVD is packaged as an Infinifilm, which from what I can see,
means they organized the extra materials into a more interactive
format. For those who want to learn more about the facts on which the
movie is based, there are quite a few things found here. A historical
figures commentary serves up archival audio as well as some new
interviews at timely moments which correspond to the movie. There is
also a historical information subtitle track which does the same.
Short video biographies on some of the key people involved with the
Cuban missile crisis is here, as well as a documentary, 'Roots of the
Cuban Missile Crisis'. As for extras dealing with movie making, there
are deleted scenes, cast and crew filmographies, some visual effects
scene deconstructions, a trailer of the movie, and a "how they
did it" documentary. There is also an interesting commentary
track with several of the filmmakers as well as star Kevin Costner,
though it is obvious he is not with the others while recording. One
other of the Infinifilm features are pop-up interactive menus which
come up at selected scenes in the movie. I found this totally useless
as all it does is point you to short clips of information found
elsewhere on the disc already.
Like I said, I like my historical dramas and this is a pretty good
one. What really turned out great was the wealth of supplemental
information found on the DVD.
