More quirky than most comedies out
today, this film still works by producing some genuine chuckles. The
unique presentation segued scenes brilliantly and a childish air
around performances perpetuated smiles. However, the serious moments
between big laughs didn't work that well. Though paced fairly quickly,
those parts felt rather slow and draining. Still, you got to admire
the sweetness they injected into the film, all the while keeping
things light.
Almost every extra was found on the second disc of this two disc set.
These included, an interesting look at director/co-writer Wes Anderson
as he worked, a hilarious TV interview with minor cast members (it was
staged), two dull deleted scenes without a commentary, short
individual interviews with the cast about their processes, a section
of artwork for the film, a collection of photographs, and two
theatrical trailers. Disc one contained the movie itself as well as a
commentary from Anderson, who shed plenty of light on everything. Also
a nice touch was an insert which showed drawings of every room in the
house.
Although definitely unconventional, this film proved to be both funny
and interesting.
