A disgraced General leading unruly
inmates in a stockade. Admittedly, it's a pretty neat premise, but I
think no amount of fleshing out could have saved this one. That said,
all the performances came across extremely well and the story elements
were revealed quite timely. However, by it's very nature, the plot
quickly falls into corniness. The obviously strong emphasis on
eliciting an emotional response, for the most part, collapses due to
predictability. Perhaps if they had stuck with the marketing of the
upside-down flag, things would have been different.
Only a couple of extras. For a behind-the-scenes featurette, we get a
fifteen minute segment filled with interviews relating to characters,
plot and the actors themselves. Eight deleted scenes come with
interesting director commentary as to why they got axed. As well,
there are the usual cast and crew information, the trailer, and
production notes. Director Rod Lurie's commentary is wonderful here as
he honestly looks at many of his creative decisions, often justifying
them to the listener. A great idea found on this DVD, is having his
words appear as subtitles. Though not really necessary here, as Lurie's
voice is clear, this should be a standard for others that are not as
crisp.
They really tried at making a dramatic heavyweight. Unfortunately,
this film ultimately fails, the result of attempts to add just too
much sentiment.
