Though it may be considered a cult film, I see this movie as being able to appeal to a varied audience. More science fiction than horror, it was more action flick than either. With fire and explosions, there really weren't that many typical scare moments. Instead, the gruesome visuals and heavy tension were what elicited most thrills. It wasn't so much the monster that made the movie compelling, but the paranoia shared amongst it's characters. The ominous plot was straight forward and filled with enough mystery to fuel itself after a relatively slow beginning. Once things got rolling, it never slowed.

Filled with bonus material, this disc had a wonderfully lengthy making-of featurette, an interesting look at two effects shots, production photos, conceptual art, some dull outtakes, production notes, information on star Kurt Russell and director John Carpenter and the theatrical trailer. There were also text intros to most sections. A great commentary was also provided from Carpenter and Russell which was filled with interesting anecdotes and genuine enjoyment.

The drama derived from the suspicious character placed this movie on another level. That of a classic.

The Movie: 9/10
The Extras: 6/10

Recommendation: One For The Library
