I remember having high expectations for this summer blockbuster when it first hit the silver screen. Well, it's been a few years since I saw it in a theater and I wasn't even a quarter as excited to see this DVD. While it indeed is action packed with bits of high drama and cute (not to mention counter productive) comedy, the emotional epic I had hoped for never materialized. There were just too many scenes in between good ones that really slowed up the film. Granted, the plot is more complicated than your basic popcorn flick, but by the end, I really felt I had sat through a long movie. On the bright side, the battles were wonderfully executed, aided by some truly seamless special effects. Unless you're a fictional history buff, it's the fighting you should come to see.

All found on one disc, this DVD comes with several bonus features. These include a brief but interesting look at two special effect scenes, two good ten minute featurettes dealing each with the fighting scenes and the history, six rather dull deleted scenes with optional commentary, a bunch of production photos, the film's trailer, a teaser, cast and crew info, and a nice little conceptual art to film section. A commentary track is done by director Roland Emmerich and producer Dean Devlin. They both have plenty to say, but only half of which is of any interest, especially when they seem to love everything about the movie.

They tried. Not quite having an epic feel, it still succeeds as a competent, though drawn-out, action movie.

The Movie: 7/10
The Extras: 3/10

Recommendation: Rent This One
