On the surface, this may just have
seemed like a simple film that covered the last performance from The
Band. What made it so remarkable was the care and planning gone into
the actual filming. With unique concert footage and short but
constructive interviews, I found this documentary effectively
compelling. That is not to say the music displayed from the group and
their legendary guest performers played no part. In fact, watching
their interactions on stage was half the entertainment. The cameras
really succeeded in capturing the essence of how special that night
truly was.
Extras in this special edition included terrific footage of a
post-concert jam session, a wonderful behind-the-scenes featurette,
some photos, the film’s trailer, and a TV spot. There were also two
commentaries, one with director Martin Scorsese and Band member Robbie
Robertson, and another with a variety of people involved with the
music and the production. Both tracks offered great tidbits of
information.
If someone as unfamiliar with The Band as I found this film arresting,
I can only imagine what devout followers took away with them.
