This is one of my favorites of all time.
It has plenty going for it - strong performances, powerful drama,
lovely camera work, exuberant battle sequences and to top it off, a
beautifully fitting score. It is this music that succeeds in gripping
one's emotions, steering it toward all the prominent scenes. I'm not
exactly sure what this expanded edition adds to the original. I
suspect it stretches out the dialogue in some of the now boring
chapters. However, it's these words that help advance a rather lengthy
plot that could easily have been more confusing.
There isn't any bonus material on this disc. Not even a commentary. If
anything is of note, it would be the DTS soundtrack which really pumps
up the already commanding score.
While I may not entirely be certain which elements are required to
make an epic, I can recognize one when I see it. If you haven't
already guessed it, this is one of them.
