I hadn't heard of this little film before and was pleasantly surprised with it in the end. Admittedly, the plot felt old at the start but was rather novel when viewed as a whole. Strong performances raised the drama without it being forced upon us. A nice touch was the tone of the movie. Tension just lingered from scene to scene creating a enigmatic ambiance to it all. That said, there really was not that much excitement since the pace wasn't all that quick. It's more about building the intensity towards the finale. What I found disappointing was the ambiguity of several of the supporting characters. It may have added to the mysteriousness of the film, but it also seemed like they were just never fleshed out. The ending too left me feeling a little ripped off. Sure, it's more poetic, but I would have rather had it clean.

Just a few extras here. One was a Sundance Channel look at the film making, which only people interested in the craft would find engrossing. Another was a short and pointless featurette which just dealt with the setup of the plot. Other extras included, a bunch of photos, some trailers for this and other films, and a TV spot. Commentary from the two directors, Scott McGehee and David Siegel was a little on the dull side. They didn't help their cause by only giving spurts of information, half of which was badly mumbled.

Simple storytelling was what shined here as such in all the better small films. It was just those final steps where the movie stumbled.

The Movie: 7/10
The Extras: 1/10

Recommendation: Rent This One
