To say this film reminded me of 'Police Academy' may understandably seem like an insult. But back in the day, I really loved those comedies (let's be clear, I'm talking of only the first few). In this movie, we got the same grand sense of fun along with similarly zany hi-jinx. We even saw highly amusing characters who all seemed to be in on the joke. However, where Police Academy had far fetched madcap antics, here they were a little more grounded in reality. While certainly not realistic, there were also not so crazily impossible to the point of unfunniness. Unfortunately, there was an amateurish feel as the more serious parts of the story lacked substance and never seemed to shape into anything. The ending especially just wasn't strong enough to either resolve the trite plot or deliver big laughs. While the first can be forgivable in comedies, the latter certainly cannot.

Extras on this DVD included quite a few hilarious deleted scenes and alternate takes, a six minute promotional featurette, the theatrical trailer and a trailer for Kung Pow. There were two separate commentaries, one from director/writer/star Jay Chandrasekhar and writer/star Erik Stolhanske, and one from writers/stars Kevin Heffernan, Steve Lemme and Paul Soter. Each track dispensed anecdotes and amusement, though the trio bestowed more of both.

There were plenty of moments I genuinely laughed out loud and that's no light achievement in today's world of complex comedy.

The Movie: 6/10
The Extras: 3/10

Recommendation: Rent This One
