The first Star Trek movie, and it's been given a director's cut treatment. I had always found the original version to be lacking something and saw the middle as excruciatingly dull. Thankfully, this new edition not only had scenes re-edited, but used digital techniques to punch up the old special effects. The result however, wasn't all that drastic. Sure, everything looked much better, but it still lingered long enough during that fly-through sequence to be boring. And the build up to the unspectacular conclusion left me wanting, just as it did before. But I suppose most of the enjoyment was derived from being re-introduced to the cast of characters. That experience remained untarnished.

This two disc set, really didn't have as many extras as it would appear. Disc two contained three interesting featurettes which in total ran about fifty minutes and dealt with how both versions came to be. There was also an area which explored how this cut differed by showing five additional scenes, a collection of trimmed scenes, and a camera test, all from the theatrical run as well as eleven of the deleted ones from the television variant. Unfortunately none had commentary with them. Rounding out this disc were, four trailers (for this director's cut, the new TV series, and two for the original movie), eight TV commercials, and a look at some storyboards. Disc one had the movie as well as a commentary from director Robert Wise, effects directors Douglas Trumbull and John Dykstra, composer Jerry Goldsmith and actor Stephen Collins. While interesting, it was a little difficult to make out what Wise was mumbling most of the time. An informative text commentary from Star Trek expert Michael Okuda was also included on this first disc.

Not terribly action oriented, this movie served better as a launching pad for further adventures.

The Movie: 4/10
The Extras: 4/10

Recommendation: See It If It's Free
