At first, I dismissed this one at the theaters as just the latest computer animated kiddie-fare fodder. Word-of-mouth suggested otherwise and a great box office gave me slight anticipation for its DVD release. Now that I've seen it, I can understand, if not agree, to its popularity. With flawless computer work, a great child-friendly plot and decent voice talent, they really put out a good product. They key was that there were actually funny "adult" moments. These were not classified as such due to its appropriateness but rather the general understanding required to get the joke. The true success here was its captivation of the minds of both the young and the old.

Extras? There are plenty here. So much so, they've packaged it in a 2-disc set. The first disc is definitely geared for the kids. While the replay value of these are low, there are several simple interactive games. There are also 4 short, manufactured, character interviews that are bound to put a smile on every face. Also found are a 'favorite scenes selection' (just spots cued up from the movie), music videos from Smash Mouth and Baha Men, a behind-the-scenes featurette, production notes, cast and crew bios and a sneak peek trailer for 'Spirit: Stallion of Cimarron'. For DVD-Rom equipped computers, there are even more programs for the kids which will provide hours of entertainment. Aside from offering the movie in widescreen and with DTS, disc two contained more serious materials such as, technical goofs, some character design progression reels, a "The Tech of Shrek" featurette, 3 storyboard pitches of deleted scenes, an international dubbing featurette and the movie's trailer. Also found on disc one, we get the same production notes and the same cast and crew bios. This disc also contained a good commentary track delivered by directors Andrew Adamson and Vicki Jensen and producer Aaron Warner. Both discs also had some of the best interactive menus I've seen in a while.

A cute movie bound to spawn sequels... Package that with more extras you can handle and I think we have a winner here.

The Movie: 9/10
The Extras: 10/10
