Argh! This movie turned out to be a
morality tale. I suppose it was to be expected, but they played it
early and laid it on thick. I wanted joke after joke, gag after gag,
and big yuks, not the light comedy this was. To be fair, there were
indeed funny moments that peppered the whole first half. Of course,
that was before decency's death grip took hold. Perhaps I'm as insipid
as the title character, but aren't we all to some degree? I wanted to
laugh at something, anything, for the whole movie, not just the setup.
What I considered an ingenious premise was only that, nothing much
more.
Plenty of extras on this disc. There were two well presented
behind-the-scenes featurettes, one from HBO and one from Comedy
Central. Shorter featurettes on makeup and stunts were quite
interesting to watch as well. Some of the eleven deleted scenes, also
found here, became dearly missed from the final version. Rounding out
the disc were a music video, the theatrical trailer, promotional spots
for Fox and a commentary from directors Bobby and Peter Farrelly. As
usually, they provided some nice insight and it's always oddly fun to
watch as they point out various people they know.
Don't look for too much of the usual Farrelly hi-jinx though. They got
replaced quite quickly with a conscience.
