In some ways, it's hard to believe this movie ever became as successful as it did. Without much boxing action and a touch on the gritty side, there really wasn't much at which to look. But that probably worked in it's favor, allowing everyone to focus on the characters and root for the underdog. Also playing a huge part in this movie's triumph was the conclusion. In any other form, it certainly would not have been as satisfactory, and perhaps not even acceptable. I'd even say it pushed the film past mediocrity despite a wonderful montage in the middle. Rest assured, this film was and always will be, an absolute champion.

Unfortunately, there were only a few extras on this disc. These included, a twenty-eight minute interview with star Sylvester Stallone which was fairly good, a dull bit of boxing rehearsal footage, a short tribute to star Burgess Meredith, an even shorter one to cinematographer James Crabe, five theatrical trailers (one for each movie in the series), a teaser trailer, and three TV spots. A moderately informative commentary was also provided from a group of people who apparently were not together during recording. They were, director John G. Avildsen, producers Irwin Winkler and Robert Chartoff, steadicam operator Garrett Brown, and actors Talia Shire, Burt Young and Carl Weathers.

Visually, this classic looked quite dated with hints of it's low budget found all over the screen. The movie as a whole however, remained timeless.

The Movie: 10/10
The Extras: 2/10

Recommendation: One For The Library
