This critical favorite, released eight
years ago, still firmly stands high above it's imitators. With a
quirkiness which allowed amusement in even the most tense of scenes,
the film's steady momentum was never abbreviated at any time. Great
dialogue, strong music selections, apt camera perspectives and
deliciously delightful characters also factored in and made many parts
quite memorable. And of course, the fun resulting from the storyline
being pieced together was the crown jewel leading to this movie's
overall success. My only small complaint was the seemingly low
production value. It distracted me at times and left a scent of
amateurishness not befitting the quality of the film. But like I said,
small complaint.
This was a two disc set with the movie itself on the first DVD along
with a pair of sneak peeks. The second disc was the one jam packed
with bonus material. A featurette with interview snippets from cast
and crew was great as were two behind-the-scene video montages. Five
deleted scenes were interesting and understandably left out after
introductions from director Quentin Tarantino. Other nice extras
enclosed were, a production design featurette, a Siskel & Ebert
"At The Movies" special devoted to Tarantino's work, A
Charlie Rose episode with Tarantino, interview footage at the
Independent Spirit Awards, a Cannes Film Festival acceptance speech, a
big section of stills, a collection of eight film reviews and eleven
articles, the US theatrical trailer as well as four international
ones, and thirteen TV spots. While there wasn't an audio commentary,
there was a terrific text one with trivia on all aspects of the film.
A good film with great moments, but it was the humor that did it for
me.
