This 2001 "re-imagining" is
really meant to be a summer popcorn flick. Watching it again on DVD,
I'm wondering why I enjoyed it so much on the big screen. I guess I'm
a sucker for the power that an IMAX sized theater can deliver to one's
senses. This time around, I found myself questioning the credibility
of the plot. I understand that it is just a movie and I am supposed to
enjoy the ride, but there is just so much my suspension of disbelief
allows. Oh well, at least you still get the unique visuals that
director Tim Burton always provides, not to mention a decent
performance from the well made-up cast - qualities that are becoming
required for blockbusters these days.
A two-disc set for a mediocre movie translates to having a lot of
material in which you probably won't have any interest. The first disc
has an option of having pop-up windows appear that contain
behind-the-scenes clips corresponding with certain parts of the film.
While they were a bit interesting, I just didn't have the desire to
watch the film again just to catch them. Aside from cast and crew
profiles, there were also two rather dull and silence-filled
commentaries each from Burton and composer Danny Elfman (whose track
also featured his music). The second disc is packed with more
supplemental material. These include a bunch of screen tests,
multi-angle/multi-audio looks at eight scenes, five extended scenes
and a lot of concept art. There were also several movie trailers and
TV spots, a look at the press kit and posters and a special music
video for the film. Quite easily, the most interesting of these
materials were the seven behind-the-scenes featurettes. In particular,
the one on ape school, where ape-like movements were learned was funny
stuff.
Well, now that I’ve watched it again, I’m left just that much more
disappointed.
