Wonderfully performed and perfectly
stylized, what this smaller film lacked in extravagance, it more than
made up in tone. From the opening shot, there existed a surreal
creepiness which enveloped every scene until the final act neared. At
that point a dreadful tension effectively emerged and carried things
to a frantic conclusion. Unfortunately the resolved plot was somewhat
of a let down and the epilogue left me longing for clarity. While I
can appreciate the first, I certainly cannot the latter. I enjoy
enigmatic endings as much as the next guy, but in this case just a
little too much was left to interpretation.
There were some mildly informative extras on this DVD which included,
a "making of" featurette, a Sundance Channel "Anatomy
of a Scene" episode, a Charlie rose interview, the theatrical
trailer, and three TV spots. A decent commentary given by
writer/director Mark Romanek and actor Robin Williams was also found
here.
Carried by a transformed Williams, this film worked quite well and was
gripping to the end.
