What we have here is a musical love
story. I'll come right out and say that this is not my cup of tea.
Invariably, I would find myself bored. As new and modern as it is, the
pace still slows down when musical dance numbers arrive and I just
find myself waiting for them to pass. But hey, I can understand why
some would like this type of thing. Actually, I'm lying. It is
basically the format to which I object, since everything else was
extremely well presented. Combined with beautifully designed sets, the
unusual cinematography successfully conveys a strong surreal feeling.
Of note, the fine performance by the entire cast gives much
credibility to the film. This relatively short and simple story is
then nicely fleshed out with highly recognizable tunes of which I can
see being the film's strongest draw.
This two-disc set is really loaded with extras. One annoyingly
implemented feature is having an icon pop up during the movie leading
to some excellent behind-the-scenes material. This would have been
great if I weren't forced to watch the move all over again. A
semi-informative commentary track from director Baz Luhrmann,
production designer Catherine Martin and director of photography Don
McAlpine was a disappointment. An ensemble like this should actually
speak more rather than leave us with silence. Another track with
Luhrmann and co-writer Craig Pearce adds some nice story information,
but a lot of times their accented ramblings became overlapped and
incomprehensible to me. That was just on disc one. The second disc has
so much more material that I won't bother to list them all in detail.
Included are plenty of short interviews with key creative talent and
photos dealing with every aspect of the picture, but the highlights of
this disc are the deleted scenes, a spotlight on the music and a
closer look at the dance numbers. It sounds strange, but I actually
found myself appreciating the film much more after watching the
extras.
While to me it was just a well-presented theater musical
captured on film, I'm sure fans of that type of thing will enjoy this
one. Oh, and fans of Nicole Kidman too.
