As moving as this film turned out to be,
the first half had me bored in puzzlement. From plot to characters,
everything seemed so ambiguous. What kept things going during this
stretch were light moments which effectively punctuated a heavy mood.
But by the time this drama finally made sense, the characters had all
but resolved their individual journeys. And I had missed it.
A few extras here. An informative "making of" documentary
was a nice bonus as were ten deleted scenes with optional explanations
as to their absences. There were also two commentary tracks. One, from
director/writer Brad Silberling was quite personal as he conveyed his
passion for the film. The other, presented by Silberling again with
actors Dustin Hoffman and Jake Gyllenhaal was less serious as they
discussed their processes.
Probably enjoyable if one can recognize the situation earlier on.
