Deliberately distinguished in look and feel, this period gangster flick unfortunately suffered from an unrewarding plot. A steep uphill climb at the start left the pace feeling slowed and bored. Confusion stemmed from having too many characters and not concise enough explanations. It did manage to pick up later on to disclose a complex and interesting story, but by then the damage was done.

There were only a few extras on this DVD including a brief but revealing featurette on director of photography Barry Sonnenfeld, several dull interview clips with cast members, a small collection of production photos and a trailer for this and two other Coen Brothers films. No commentary track to be found.

From a muddled beginning, an average film emerged.

The Movie: 4/10
The Extras: 2/10

Recommendation: See It If It's Free
