A heavy melodrama containing a few light
moments, it almost felt like I was watching a soap opera. With an
uniquely absorbing premise, the caliber of performances that you'd
expect from this cast, and a strong resonating score, the only
impediment was an extremely drawn out pace found in every key scene.
Whether as emphasis to dramatic moments or not, it just made me take
notice as to how slow things had become. Unfortunately, that one issue
ruined the whole experience and left me disappointed and bored.
This ultimate edition really didn't have that much extra and came in a
two disc set. Along with the movie on disc one, there were production
notes and information on the cast and crew. Disc two consisted of an
old black and white film, ‘Death Takes a Holiday', the inspiration
for this modern movie. I found that it too was quite dreary. Also on
the second disc were a decent behind-the-scenes featurette, a lovely
photo montage, trailers for this and other films, and oddly, the very
same production notes and cast and crew info found on disc one. There
wasn't a commentary track.
A solid film, it just ran much too slow.
