I knew there was a movie before the
series, but had no idea what it was about or who it's stars were. What
I did expect were the same kind of lighthearted laughs. I was wrong.
What we get is very crude humor without a laugh track mixed into a
more serious environment. Still works for me. However, there is a
problem here - the lack of plot. There is no underlying story to be
told - just a look at day-to-day life. Luckily, with all the subtle
and not-so-subtle laughs, one doesn't really miss it. This likable
cast does indeed make the film a classic.
Extras were kind of tame for this "Five Star Collection".
While the three behind-the-scenes documentaries are quite informative,
they tend to overlap information. The film restoration featurette is
nothing more than some notes and a split-screen comparison of the
versions. The 'Cast Reunion' was more of a cast interview while a
critic tossed them a few lightweight questions. Director Robert
Altman's commentary was not only extremely sparse, but when he did
speak, it was usually material presented in the documentaries. Let's
see - what's left...oh...a stills gallery and the trailer. They were
fine I guess.
While it won’t have you in stitches, it will brighten your day as
you smile through this film.
