With the release of ‘Red Dragon', I thought it a perfect time to revisit this somewhat obscure older title. Two edits were included in this DVD set, the theatrical version, and a director's cut. I chose to watch the latter even though the other had much superior picture and sound. Content-wise, I suspect nothing much differentiated the two since only three minutes separated their running times. But looking squarely at the movie, I ended up with mixed feelings. I liked how it offered a well paced straight forward story. Not too flashy and competently told, what threw me were the aesthetic details. Wardrobe in particular made everything feel dated, though some dialogue and music choices also factored in strongly. And towards the end, several awkward cuts, whether deliberate or by necessity, felt amateurish and unforgivably took me out of the cinematic moment. Luckily, the wonderful plot remained firmly intact for me to enjoy.

As stated earlier, this was a two disc set with two different cuts included. In terms of extras, the first disc also contained a trailer, cast and crew info, and two semi-interesting modern featurettes. One was just an interview with cinematographer Dante Spinotti, while the other had several of the cast voicing their thoughts and memories. No commentary track on either discs. There was however a great booklet with extra info and photos included with the package.

If you sever it's ties, this passed as a capable detective drama. But associated with it's sequels (if you can call them that) this film does not compare well.

The Movie: 5/10
The Extras: 4/10

Recommendation: See It If It's Free
