You know, I think I'm a sucker for these emotionally charged period pieces. Though reminiscent to me of a majestic Merchant Ivory film due to lovely performances and designs, the characters here didn't have complex problems. Instead, everything was quite simple and straight forward. The plot moved quickly and never lingered. This, of course, was due to the source material's target audience, young girls. However, even I liked it. And most appealing was the epic nature of the story. It transcended the homespun romance and delivered an almost nostalgic feel. Well done.

On this disc were a few nice extras. Besides a wonderful, though brief, making-of featurette, there were, two nice deleted scenes, a simple time-line following the influence of the book, a short look at costume and production designs, two crude trivia games, trailers for this and other films, some cast and crew information, and an optional audio track that carried only the beautiful Thomas Newman score. Also, director Gillian Armstrong provided an informative commentary, though unfortunately she did become silent at times.

I had never read the book, but if this film was any indication, it deserves to be a celebrated family classic.

The Movie: 9/10
The Extras: 5/10

Recommendation: One For The Library
