Two versions of this movie were presented in this set - a director's cut and the U.S. theatrical version. Being my first time with either, I watched the theatrical one first. Scenes seemed disconnected and paced so slow to start that I actually fell asleep. The fairy tale plot made little sense and drew to a jumbled conclusion. This movie's only saving grace were it's visuals. They somehow managed to be vivid, while also surreal. Still, the story greatly outweighs the sights in my book, so you can imagine how little hope I had for the director's cut. But I have to say, there's something to be said about low expectations. While the story remained mostly the same, ideas appeared much clearer. Of course it still looked the same. Set design, makeup and director Ridley Scott's eye combined to make something breathtaking. With a much better fitting Jerry Goldsmith score and some cohesiveness to the plot, I did enjoy it more, but not that much more.

Almost all extras were found on disc two along with the theatrical version. These consisted of, an informative making-of featurette, two boring deleted scenes, three storyboard sequences, a music video, a photo gallery, cast and crew information, two theatrical trailers, four TV spots, production notes, and an option to listen to the isolated Tangerine Dream score. A commentary from Scott was found on disc one with his director's cut. He gave plenty of interesting information and only once was silent for an appreciable amount of time. Of note, there was a nice commentary table of contents, I hope that catches on.

Give the director's cut a chance for that version was almost appealing.

Theatrical Version: 2/10
Director's Cut: 4/10
The Extras: 4/10

Recommendation: Theatrical - Be Warned - Not Worth The Time
Director's Cut - See It If It's Free
