Great idea, and without much of an
actual plot, it was what sold this movie along with the spoofing and
slapstick. That wasn't necessarily bad, but here they tried to stretch
about ten minutes of good material into a feature length motion
picture. It just didn't work and became boring. Admittedly, I found a
lot of the bits laugh-out-loud funny, but it got really old, really
fast - especially the dubbing. One voice doing almost all of the work
nearly drove me nuts. The digital effects though, were quite well done
- not groundbreaking, but very serviceable. For a flick I instantly
deemed from the trailer as trash, it wasn't as horrible as I had
predicted. However, I wasn't that far off either.
Plenty of bonus materials were found on this DVD. While an extremely
short behind-the-scenes featurette was amusing, it certainly didn't
contain any information. A visual effects section held some
before/after computerization clips as well as a cow animatic. There
were also eleven commentary-less deleted scenes, half of which were
hilarious and missed. They even presented some of them with a boring
alternate dialogue. Rounding out the extras were, a comical montage of
the character "Touguey", six scenes with alternate dialogue,
three TV promo spots, the theatrical trailer, a trailer for the DVD
release of Super Troopers, a few production photos, and a quick
animated farewell. There's one commentary which was funnier than the
film itself from director/writer/star Steve Oedekerk and
producer/editor Paul Marshal as well as two other full length audio
tracks. One, with the original dialogue in Mandarin and nonsense
English, and another with a thespian approach to the line readings.
Both were entertaining at first, but like the movie, ran their course
rather quickly.
With the right kind of mind set, you just might enjoy twenty minutes
of this instead of ten.
