Walking into this movie, I could only
see three possible conclusions. They'll show he's an alien, they'll
turn him into a loony or they'll leave it ambiguous. The problem was,
they did not really stick with one of those choices. And with that, I
felt robbed. On the other hand, the journey was fun. They played the
story one way, then another, and let the audience root for the alien.
Realism became a slight factor, but only after things turned a little
serious. While it held my attention firmly to start, it's grip did
slip towards the end.
The bonus materials found on this disc include a quality
behind-the-scenes featurette, a not so different alternate ending, six
unmissed delete scenes, a few production photos from star Jeff
Bridges, a storyboard comparison, cast and crew info, the theatrical
trailer and some production notes. There were also several promotional
clips for other Universal offerings. Commentary-wise, one was provided
by director Iain Softley. He gave information more on the technical
side, along with bouts of silence.
This film owed all it's amusement to one thing, a fantastical notion.
