Here's a film who's existence is an excuse to see big and scary dinosaurs chase hapless humans across the movie screen again. More dinos and more thrills was clearly the mandate here. The story is utterly preposterous, but luckily, only 15 minutes is spent on setting it all up. While not as revolutionary as the first movie, the special effects here are fantastic and an improvement on previous efforts. With pretty much non-stop excitement, this flick just screams "Summer Blockbuster".

They really stacked on a lot of extras for this DVD. While the "Making Of..." and "The New Dinosaurs of..." featurettes were pointless and forgettable, the tour of Stan Winston Studio was quite interesting as was a behind-the-scene clip. A step-by-step look at ILM's work was informative as well, though the set-up for that section was very awkward. Turntables of the computer graphic dinosaurs was a nice touch at first, but quickly became dull. Rounding out the extras were, some storyboard to final feature comparisons, theatrical trailers for all three films, a peek at a real dig site, a photo archive, production notes, cast and crew info, other film recommendations, some spots of Universal products and info for the JP Institute (a website from what I can see). There is also a commentary track with 4 special effects people. While it is fun to learn which elements were computer generated and which were puppets, it can quickly become boring (due to tooting each others' horns) and confusing (since one can't exactly be sure who's talking).

Without a credible story, this movie does however manage to deliver good dino action. Too bad we've seen it all before.

The Movie: 6/10
The Extras: 5/10

Recommendation: Rent This One
