If they were aiming to produce a serious drama here, they didn’t totally succeed. They started out very well, but midway through, they populated the film with several alarmingly awkward characters. Those minor roles became caricatures and ultimately detracted from the credibility of the others. Whenever they were featured, it disrupted the flow and made me sit back off the edge of my seat. Still, looking past that, there were powerfully emotional moments to accompany transfixing performances from the leads. Enough genuine tension was generated to keep me anxious for the most part, and while the hostage thing has been done before, here it somehow felt fresh.

As extras, this disc contained a good behind-the-scenes featurette, a depressing and uninformative documentary on the U.S. health care system, six interesting deleted scenes, an infrequently used trivia subtitle track, cast and crew information, the trailer and production notes. As an Infinifilm, the obligatory (and pointless) branching option was included. When on, cues appeared during the movie which lead to clips, mostly comprised of material already found elsewhere on the disc. A fairly entertaining ensemble commentary (with director Nick Cassavetes, screenwriter James Kearns, cinematographer Rogier Stoffers, producer Mark Burg and star Kimberly Elise) rounded out the bonus materials.

Public social awareness aside, this was still an entertaining film when viewed on a more personal level.

The Movie: 7/10
The Extras: 5/10

Recommendation: Rent This One
