I loved this movie. How could it not do
anything but succeed? Sports for the guys, romance for the girls, a
movie star for everyone and cutesy comedy peppered throughout. Strong
performances were displayed but better still was some wonderful
writing. Scene after scene just felt so refreshingly original. While
many may make the attempt, few movies can successfully disarm you at
the start with it's light tone, only to briefly hammer in some real
drama in the end. Simply brilliant.
In a two disc set, most of the extras were found on disc two. Here,
there were five mildly missed deleted scenes, a decent making-of
featurette, some brief rehearsal footage, a fun faux commercial, an
amusing look at the life of a real sports agent, a music video,
trailers for this movie and 'As Good As It Gets', filmographies, and a
photo gallery. There were also two gems on this disc, the first of
which was the mission statement written by the central character.
While a little lengthy, it satisfied my curiosity about this
much-mentioned document. The second gem was a feature length video
commentary from director Cameron Crowe and stars Tom Cruise, Cuba
Gooding Jr., and Renée Zellweger. Though it did have an aspect of
star gazing, there was more entertainment value derived from the true
joy these people exemplified for the film and each other. There was
also a audio version of the same commentary found along with the movie
on disc one.
With something for everyone, in the end, the smart writing was what
really made it so exceptional.
