I found this flick hilarious the first
time I saw in the theater, and I still find it hilarious on DVD. Every
type of joke is visited here, from self-mockery to actual slapstick.
While most of the yuks truly are funny, the true genius is that they
are quite frequent without beating you over the head with other gags
at the same time. This is the best one from director Kevin Smith, due
to his audience already knowing the characters. Without taking time to
explain everyone, we just get rolling along quite quickly. This is
also his prettiest film, and sheds the amateurish feel previous
efforts all contained. Those just being introduced to Smith's movies,
really should see the others to get your full laugh's worth.
A two disc set translates into a boatload of great extras. On the
first disc, we're treated to trailers of this and other films as well
as a commentary from Smith, producer Scott Mosier and star Jason Mewes.
As usual, Smith's ensemble discussions on the films are a delight,
filled with their own entertainment value that really do convey their
own enjoyment. On the second disc, we get some more great stuff. There
are forty-two, count 'em, forty-two deleted scenes, each with their
own intro to explain what's going on. I have to admit, about 10 of
them aren't that entertaining, but hey, that still leaves thirty-two!
Other gems found are four closer looks at some very funny scenes, two
internet trailers, a rather short gag reel, a good behind-the-scenes
featurette, a look at that the concert scene, two music videos, a
Comedy Central look at the film and a perversely funny look at some
story boards. Of the more mediocre extras, we get, production photos,
poster art, comic art, cast and crew info, six TV spots, and some info
on Morris Day and the Time. Yes, that was a lot, but was a joy to sit
through.
As stated earlier, Smith's best yet. I was so into it, afterwards, I
found my own language a bit profane. Yeah, that's kind of a bad side
effect.
