Not as memorable a flick as director
Quentin Tarantino's earlier two, this movie nonetheless still managed
to be a terrifically fun watch. Again, the humor was wonderfully
present in every other line of dialogue. But what may have been a turn
off, was the even and purposeful development of both plot and
characters. While the comical personalities did made up for the lack
of action and tension, a lingering started to set in. But when it
finally came time for the big plan to play out, I found myself
securely strapped in, focused on the ride. And that I didn't exactly
know what was coming (though I presumptuously thought I did), it's
straightforwardness made it that much more enjoyable.
A two disc collector's edition, most of the bonus materials were found
on the second disc. Of these extras, the enthusiasm shown in a lengthy
making-of featurette and a long interview with Tarantino really rubbed
off and raised my appreciation for the film. The other (and now
comparatively mundane) extras included, six deleted or alternate
scenes (with one introduction for all), the "Chicks With
Guns" video, a review clip from Siskel and Ebert's "At The
Movies", some MTV promotional footage, a huge section of
production photos, a nice collection of print reviews and articles, a
few filmographies, three theatrical trailers, and eight TV spots. A
nice touch was also having a sizable collection of trailers from the
early works of actors Pam Grier and Robert Forster. There were even
radio spots from some of Grier's movies on the DVD. On the first disc
(which held the movie), there were also a short introduction from
Tarantino, scene selections by soundtrack chapters, and an optional
trivia text track. Though out-of-sync with the movie for the most
part, those fun facts proved quite interesting and informative. Sadly,
no audio commentary.
While it may not be as sophisticated as one may have expected, this
film more than makes up by amusing the viewer from the strong
beginning to the understated end.
