I somehow remember enjoying this movie
when I was younger as just one of those teen movies like Sixteen
Candles and Ferris Bueller's Day Off. Watching it again, I still feel
that way, even as the film-makers insist that it was the anti-John
Hughes movie of its time. Sure, the subject is much darker and the
language is much more harsh, but hey, teenagers, high school ... it's
a teen movie! With a quirky story and a competent class of actors,
this one stands out - even to this day.
As for extras, here we find a "remembering back"
documentary, talent info, and a theatrical trailer. Another great
bonus is a screenplay excerpt with the original ending of the script.
Commentary is provided by director Michael Lehmann, producer Denise Di
Novi and writer Daniel Waters. These 3 prove to be an entertaining
listen as they recall the days spent making this film.
Good movie in its time. Good movie now. It's all in the writing I say.
