Seemingly an amalgamation of several
movie sub-genres, this WWII/prison/racial bigotry/courtroom drama
certainly was ambitious - maybe a little too much so. Don't expect too
much military action though, for aside from the opening, there wasn't
any. But it did present fairly strong visuals and a briskly paced plot
which held my attention firm through the start and into the middle.
Unfortunately, things took a turn for the worse in the last half hour
when the story clumsily became old and ultimately disappointing. It's
too bad. I really didn't want to see it take that route - but I guess
I can't be too harsh since I was enjoying it for a while.
Only a few extras. Ten good deleted scenes, a small collection of
photos, and trailers for this movie and other products were it. Two
commentary tracks, the first of which was very informative with
director Gregory Hoblit, screenwriter Billy Ray, and star Bruce Willis
(who barely spoke). While the second focused more on the movie making
process, producer David Foster's track was somewhat wasted, for as the
movie went on, he spoke less and less.
It felt relatively fresh for the most part, but by the end you'll
realize you've seen this movie before.
