A children's book? I had my doubts. So I was quite surprised with how well this film turned out in the end. Now I'm not familiar with the actual books, so I can't attest to faithfulness, but I do not see how an imagination can top what was presented. This movie will easily capture an open mind - a child's or otherwise. With a cleverly light tone, one never really cared to question the erratic scenes. Everything just got soaked into a mindless adventure filled with decent special effects and cute kiddie comedy. Although it did run a little long, it would be worth it for a potentially strong series to have a firm base. Sure it's fantasy, but it's fun fantasy.

Disc one of this two-disc set had the film, cast and crew information, and two trailers. The second disc contained a maze of interactive screens clearly designed for the youngsters. And I could see it being of great fun to explore...once. After that, annoyance. But, with some patience, you would find seven wonderful deleted scenes, some conceptual art, tours of locations from the film, a good interview-driven featurette with the film makers, and plenty of short character specific scenes from the movie. Unfortunately, there was no commentary track for neither the film nor the deleted scenes.

Those skeptics out there who regard this as just one for the kids will be in for a pleasant surprise.

The Movie: 9/10
The Extras: 2/10

Recommendation: One For The Library
