Think of it as a more realistic and
emotional version of 'The Mighty Ducks', only with baseball instead of
hockey. While the comparison may be unfair, it needs to be said that I
really liked that first 'Ducks' movie. This movie I enjoyed as well,
but even more. The big difference was that this one is a more mature
movie, not just targeted to kids, but at adults as well. The key to
that, is that every player was not an over-the-top character. While
there are some (walkman wearing pitcher, baby brother that gets left
out), most are portrayed as regular normal kids. To me, that made a
huge difference and enabled me to actually feel for the team.
While at first glance there may seem to be a good amount of extras,
there really isn't. After a rather short and uninformative making-of
featurette, we just get three deleted scenes, the trailer, a music
video and three 30-second promotional spots. There is also a mediocre
commentary track provided by director Brian Robbins and screenwriter
John Gatins. While some of their anecdotes were fun, most really weren't
that interesting.
Unfortunately, this film will probably suffer from comparisons by
people who really didn't care for The Mighty Ducks. Oh well, their
loss.
