A true epic in it's magnitude, this film
looked and felt a lot like 'Lawrence of Arabia', twenty years it's
predecessor. While not containing as much action, it still succeeded
in capturing the viewer with the life story of a remarkable man. Ben
Kingsley's performance, as you already know, was masterful without
turning the man into a caricature. As with many biographical movies,
side characters ended up lost in the shuffle and came across one
dimensionally. However, this probably served the movie well, as we
focused that much more on the man himself.
Extra features found on this disc included a great interview with
Kingsley, a nice but rather drawn out photo montage, a brief look at
some of the Mahatma's quotes, some abrupt newsreel footage, the
theatrical trailer, filmographies and production notes. There was no
commentary track found here.
While the visuals may have seemed dated, the legend did not. This was
a commanding movie of the man, one that will probably stand forever as
the greatest testimonial to him.
