This series had never been a favorite of
mine, but I can't say I never enjoyed it. Here we have a collection of
the first thirteen episodes where we were introduced to an interesting
group of core characters. Though one might assume a heavy sci-fi spin,
laughs turned out to vary in type and reference. While the jokes were
never at the level to have me in stitches, most at least generated a
chuckle. The plot premises were all initially sharp and nicely
diverse, but there were a few I tired of before the episode was up.
Still, a nice start.
This three disc set had it's bonus material spread out among the
three. Deleted scenes for select episodes (without commentary) were
found on every disc. The first disc also held an early anamatics
sequence, a script and storyboards for the first episode. The final
DVD had a fascinating behind-the-scenes featurette and a gallery of
conceptual drawings. And for commentary tracks, each episode had one
from creator Matt Groening and crew. All were light in tone as the
group shared plenty of interesting information.
Not hilarious, but not boring. A fairly solid opening season for this
series.
