This period thriller's biggest success was it's spooky ambience. The shocking scenes and slickly cut camera movements gave an uneasy feel to the whole first half of the film. Unfortunately, these early parts were also quite confusing. Too many characters were quickly introduced along with questionable motivations and red herring plot lines. Though it kept me thinking, I hated that they were not all neatly resolved in the end. The second half, retaining the decent performances and strong visuals from the first, had a tighter focus, allowing the story to flow more smoothly. However, a problem did arrive in the form of a somewhat anti-climactic conclusion that didn't fool anyone. That's not to say the build up wasn't clean, for it made sense and I did feel rewarded for paying attention. It's just that I expected more.

This two-disc set had quite a few extras. On disc one there were twenty-one deleted scenes which were understandably not in the final film. There's also a commentary from directors Albert and Allen Hughes, writer Rafael Yglesias, cinematographer Peter Deming and actor Robbie Coltrane. While quite informative, it failed to be entertaining. It wasn't an ensemble recording and commentary didn't always correspond to the scene in the movie. Disc two contained more bonus material including, the movie's trailer, a trailer for Unfaithful, and six featurettes. One of these, covering the actual mythology I found particularly interesting. The others were quite good as well, each dealing with topics such as, set design, the graphic novel, absinthe, a set tour, and general behind-the-scenes action.

A competently made movie with well constructed thrills. I just wish it ended stronger.

The Movie: 6/10
The Extras: 6/10

Recommendation: Rent This One
