Two unrelated words for this film -
ambitious and failure. This mess started out well but when everything
started to confuse me, I checked out emotionally as well as
cerebrally. Maybe it's just me and I missed some key background info
along the way, but were that the case, I must have missed a lot. But
the action was pretty good as were the computer graphics.
Unfortunately, that wasn't nearly enough.
Extras here consisted of two trailers (and one each for Spider-Man and
Metropolis), a montage of looks for the main character, and lengthy
storyboard/crude animation scenes with the option of having a
commentary and trivia subtitles. In terms of feature length
commentaries, there were three. One from a set of Japanese animators
provided much insight to the plot (via a subtitle translation) and was
entertaining as it was obvious they were enjoying themselves. Another
from a trio of English speaking animators also filled in much of the
story and discussed various techniques utilized. The third commentary
contained the score with composer Elliot Goldenthal relaying what mood
he was trying to musically set.
It was a good attempt and would have succeeded I suspect were it not
for the blundered plot.
