Both original and 20th Anniversary
versions of the film were included here. I chose to watch the latter
with it's retooled effects and additional scenes. Thankfully, this new
version held true to the original and was still an enjoyment to watch,
not feeling too dated nor coming off overly reworked for modern times.
The simple straight forward plot still oozed family-friendly
sentimentality and delivered emotional swells. What else can I say? It
still works terrifically.
A two disc set, each had one version along with several bonus
materials. With the 20th Anniversary edition were a nice featurette on
composer John William's live orchestration for the reissue's premiere,
an optional audio track featuring that live performance, a short intro
with director Steven Spielberg, and an unimpressive look at our solar
system for the kids. The original theatrical version DVD shared it's
space with a smart "making of" featurette, a reunion piece
with the principles involved, conceptual designs, production stills,
cast and crew information and trailers for this and another home
entertainment release. Unfortunately, there were no commentary tracks
on either disc.
A classic which delivers as well if not better with these new touches.
Now if only they would work on enhancing the Universal Studios ride
too...
