In every way, this movie was a fairy
tale for the modern age. While the plot was a tad pedestrian, it was
presented in an engaging enough manner as to not be labeled “just
for kids”. The collection of characters too were quirky enough to
accommodate anybody's sense amusement. But of course the obvious draw
would be the visual concept. A dazzling yet oddly familiar surreal
quality enveloped every scene which set the mood perfectly and allowed
the audience just to enjoy themselves. Not terribly deep, but
pleasantly different.
Bonus material included on the DVD included, a short and cosmetic
behind-the-scenes featurette, a section of brief interview clips from
cast and crew, a tiny selection of concept art, two trailer, and three
TV spots (two of which were in Spanish). Two commentary tracks here.
One from director Tim Burton provided little information since he
didn't say much, and another was from composer Danny Elfman who spoke
thoroughly of his process between lulls in the score.
Aside from "fun", another word comes to mind to describe
this film. Creative.
